چکیده

INTRODUCTION As the geriatric population is increasing, impairment related to ankle and subtalar arthritis has also become commonplace. Arthodesis is considered the standard procedure for severe ankle or hindfoot arthritis, but there are advocates of total joint arthroplasty, low tibial osteotomy, and distraction arthroplasty (1). In order to preserve patient mobility and function independence, ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) and hindfoot orthoses (HFO) have been utilized to treat disorders including ankle and subtalar arthritis (2, 3). Hindfoot orthoses (HFO) have the potential advantage of increased patient compliance because of smaller size and lighter weight. It is generally accepted that orthosis design affects stiffness, but there is limited published information regarding stiffness testing of these AFO or HFO devices (4). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stiffness of AFO and HFO devices and to determine the effect of a standard brace modification used to improve patient comfort, the malleolar cut-out.

Stiffness of the Arizona Ankle-Foot Orthosis Before and After Modification for Gait Analysis

The purpose of this project was to measure the stiffness of the Arizona ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) before and after it was modified for gait analysis with a foot specific marker set. Five Arizona AFOs were tested in the intact condition in a custom testing device in the sagittal and coronal planes. After testing in the intact condition, 2.5-cm diameter holes were drilled in the malleoli and the ...

A new structural concept in moulded fixed ankle foot orthoses and comparison of the bending stiffness of four constructions.

There are many reasons why a rigid ankle foot orthosis (AFO) may be prescribed. In some cases it is desirable that the rigidity is sufficient to maintain a constant ankle position throughout the gait cycle. There is a need to determine a design of cosmetic, lightweight AFO that provides the necessary stiffness whilst being acceptable to the patient, encouraging continued wear with the resultant...

Ankle-Foot Orthosis Made by 3D Printing Technique and Automated Design Software

We described 3D printing technique and automated design software and clinical results after the application of this AFO to a patient with a foot drop. After acquiring a 3D modelling file of a patient's lower leg with peroneal neuropathy by a 3D scanner, we loaded this file on the automated orthosis software and created the "STL" file. The designed AFO was printed using a fused filament fabricat...

Precision orthotics: optimising ankle foot orthoses to improve gait in patients with neuromuscular diseases; protocol of the PROOF-AFO study, a prospective intervention study

INTRODUCTION In patients with neuromuscular disorders and subsequent calf muscle weakness, metabolic walking energy cost (EC) is nearly always increased, which may restrict walking activity in daily life. To reduce walking EC, a spring-like ankle-foot-orthosis (AFO) can be prescribed. However, the reduction in EC that can be obtained from these AFOs is stiffness dependent, and it is unknown whi...

Biomechanics of uphill walking using custom ankle-foot orthoses of three different stiffnesses.

UNLABELLED Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) can provide support and improve walking ability in individuals with plantarflexor weakness. Passive-dynamic AFO stiffness can be optimized for over-ground walking, however little research exists for uphill walking, when plantarflexor contributions are key. PURPOSE Compare uphill walking biomechanics (1) between dynamic AFO users and able-bodied control su...
